Since the release of The Emptiness Machine on September 5, I’ve been on a major Linkin Park binge. I made a 68-song, almost 4 hour long playlist on Apple Music of my favorite tracks from all their albums, plus a few extras. It’s been on repeat for nearly two months.
I absolutely cannot wait for the album to come out on November 15!
To whet our appetites, last week Linkin Park released the 3rd single for From Zero. This one is rather different than the first two and is called Over Each Other.
Unlike the first two songs, which are more rock-oriented and call back to Linkin Park’s early days, this song is a slower ballad and more pop-oriented.
As an aside, you have to give Linkin Park credit for how they have introduced these singles. The first single (also the first real song on the album) starts with Mike Shinoda singing before Emily enters as the new singer in the second verse. It works perfectly. The 2nd single highlights the rhyming that was prevelant on the first two albums and also lets Emily showcase a great scream.
This 3rd single is all Emily and lets her highlight her amazing vocal style. She can sing soft, she can sing clean, she can add growl. She can do it all. This song starts slow and I really like the drum sound. The song builds in the Linkin Park way, adding more “stuff” as it goes on, all layered wonderfully. The lyrics seem to be about a relationship ending as it goes from “all we are is talking over each other” to “are we over each other”. Like the other two songs it is rather short, but this just keeps you wanting to play it again.
The video was produced by Joe Hahn and is pretty cool as well, telling a short story.
The song (on Apple Music, not the video) ends with Mike saying “now get your screaming pants on”, which has people excited for the song Casualty, which follows it on the album.
